Despite the success and popularity of the CVR-1, it was felt in the REF high command that a hard armor was impractical for a mecha pilot - but some sort of armor protection was considered necessary, to guard the pilot against shrapnel and fragments. Furthermore, it was decided to make this suit capable of serving as a limited environment suit, for use by pilots on planets with hostile atmospheres (or none at all) and in space. Entering service in 2020, the CVR-2 flexi-armor was an immediate hit. Soon, it became the standard light infantry armor in most combat environments, and served as the REF's hazardous environment suit for two decades. The CVR-2 was made up of a helmet, a single flexible suit, and a hard piece that protected the upper chest, back and shoulders. Furthermore, the CVR-2 was not completely incompatible with the CVR-1 armor. A medium-sized soldier could wear a CVR-1 armor suit designed for large soldiers over his CVR-2 suit - with the exception of the helmet and the hard shoulder-piece - for the full ballistic protection of the hard armor with the environmental capabilities of the flexi-armor. This configuration was, however, heavy and bulky, and was mainly used in low gravity situations. Eventually, with the introduction of the Cyclone as the main emergency vehicle of REF aircraft pilots, the CVR-2 fell into increasing disuse, and by the 2040's, the CVR-3 had replaced it for most purposes, the main exception being the REF Navy, who used it for pilots on missions that were not likely to see the pilot on a planetary surface.

The CVR-2 is composed of a kevlar weave, and provides fair protection against small arms fire, and good protection against small grenade and shell fragments. The armored collar piece is composed of a plastic-ceramic composite for maximal resistance to penetration and thermic explosive damage for minimal weight and provides excellent protection against small grenade and shell fragments, good protection against small arms fire, and poor resistance to heavier infantry weapons, such as the 12.7mm machinegun round, as well as from fragments and near misses from higher caliber weapons.

The CVR-2 armor has the following features:

• Full temperature and pressure control and insulation. The suit is insufficient for protection above 75 and below -55 degrees Celsius. The suit is rated from a vacuum to a pressure of 200 kilopascals.
• Independent Oxygen supply, 30 minutes maximum; external consumables tanks may be worn as a backpack.
• Heat resistant up to 500K for brief periods
• Helmet with variable-tint photochromic polarized polycarbon faceplate.
• Radio microphone and speakers in the helmet
