The Ragnarok missile was developed by the Southern Cross as a successor to the nuclear Diamondback D. By using a new and lighter warhead with a Californium fission trigger, enough mass and space was freed to increase the missile fuel and thus its range. However, compared to the nuclear Diamondback, the Ragnarok needed its fission trigger far more often replaced due to the extremely short half-life of the Californium isotope used. As with the Lightning, the external dimensions of the Ragnarok were identical to those of the Diamondback, and thus any mecha that can carry and fire a Diamondback could do the same with the Ragnarok, provided the correct interface software is uploaded to the mecha.
Two production runs of the Ragnarok were made by the Southern Cross. The initial run was made in 2027-2028, when 4000 missiles were produced. A second run was made in 2033, to replace the missiles lost or used in the Second Robotech War. Few missiles remain nowadays, and almost all their warheads have degenerated to an inert level.
