The Dagger was in many ways a stepping stone between the pure air- to-air missiles like the Scorpion and the multi-purpose missiles like the Stiletto. It was the first missile with the low length/diameter ratio characteristic to most Robotech missiles, but was in its use a pure air intercept missile. Many of the lessons of the Dagger design were incorporated into what later became the Stiletto missile.
The Dagger saw some service, but due to the rapid technological changes and the development of the Stiletto its production run and service history were short, and the missile was completely withdrawn in 2008.
